It's important to know what to expect from an initial appointment, especially if you are new to therapy.
The initial appointment consists of an assessment of the problems you are experiencing, now and in the past. This usually results in a medical/mental health diagnosis, in order to justify engagement in therapy. For some, this can be a process that is comforting; for others, this may create more distress. Please inform me at time of assessment if you would like to discuss diagnosis, or if you would rather avoid it. Following this process, we will talk about the frequency of therapy that I recommend, and would best support you. This sometimes includes referrals to higher levels of care than I can offer in an outpatient setting. Some examples are included below:
Meeting individually 1 on 1, 1x/week
Meeting individually 1 on 1, 1x/2 weeks
Meeting individually 1 on 1, 1x/month
Having a level of care increased, so that appropriate group therapy may be included (provided by community partners)
If you have any questions around this process...good! I'll be happy to answer any you may have.
